Tricks on getting your kids excited about school.

The beginning of the school year can be a very nerve-racking and exciting time for both you and your kids. As time goes on and we get further into the cold season, school can start seeming like a chore and your kids might have a bleak outlook on heading off on the school bus each morning. How do you raise that excitement level again?


  1. Be a role model. As a parent, you are one of the most influential figures in a child’s life. When parents read a book or take an adult education class, they’re modeling that everyone continues to learn. In a kid, this helps to instill a positive idea on what learning means to them.
  2. Get them involved in activities they are interested in. Talk with your kids and find out what they are interested in learning more about in practical areas, such as soccer, chess or art, etc. Introduce them and have them get signed up for activities and clubs at the school having to do with their interests. Not only will this get them more involved in school, but will allow them to grow in many different areas and make new friends.
  3. Encourage meaningful relationships. When kids have great friends at school they are more inclined to get excited about waking up early and head out to school.
  4. Show an interest. Talk with your kids, go to their sports games as much as possible, and support them in their endeavors. This lets your kids know that you care, that you see when they are in need of help and that you acknowledge when they are doing well.
  5. Set the tone.


School doesn’t have to be an inevitably awful part of a kid’s life, it can be fun and it should be a place where they are leaning a lot, practically and academically. Try out these tips to get your kids more excited about attending school!

The History of Halloween

October 31st has arrived and the things that only haunt us in horror films have come to life. Zombies, witches, ghosts, and vampires walk among us asking for candy at our doors.

This eerie night and well known holiday originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints; soon, Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats.

And so, with this haunted day approaching we hope you and the kids have scary costumes ready for a night of scaring off ghosts and trick or treating! Have a spooky Halloween!

What to do in Boston during the fall:


Experiencing Boston during the fall is different than any other season with the changing leaves, the crisp air, and the holiday spirit that is just beginning to surface. Because of this, there are many fun things to do in Boston during the fall. Here are a few:


  1. Take a kid-friendly walking tour of the historical sites in Boston. The historical atmosphere steeped with the feeling of fall will invoke feelings nostalgia mingled with warmth and happiness. Grab a cup of hot cocoa with the kids and take a deeper look at the origination of Boston from.
  2. Experience the awesome foggy Shakespeare performance at the Arnold Arboretum on October 21st.
  3. Take a trip to a real-deal pumpkin patch. Once you get home you can start on the family craft of carving pumpkins into jack o’lanterns to get ready for Halloween.
  4. Visit a Boston area museum such as The Boston’s Children Museum, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner, or Harvard Arts Museum in order to check out the season’s new exhibits.

Autumn is a time to get out and explore the city in all its beauty during this season. Be sure to include these items on your To Do list this fall.

Why is a proper bedtime is important for your kids?

Getting your kids to bed early has more benefits than you may think. Research is proving that sleep can reduce your child’s risk of obesity and catching a cold as well as increase success in school.


Parents can generally tell when their kids aren’t getting enough sleep by their disposition in the morning and through the day, but research shows that sleep is also essential to health. Sleep is just as important as nutrition and exercise. It’s when the body heals cells and repackages neurotransmitters, chemicals which help your brain communicate with the rest of your body. Experts have recently been able to validate that sleep gives brain cells the chance to flush out disease-causing toxins as well.


On top of all this, while sleeping your body secretes growth hormones and so kids primarily grow while they sleep. Research into children with a lacking of growth hormone has shown that they sleep less than average. There is research that shows that an inadequacy of sleep can lead to weight problems. Children, starting at infancy, can become overweight from a lack of sleep. You produce proteins that are essential to fighting off infection, illness and stress. Too little sleep impacts the body’s ability to fight off germs.

In light of this, make sure with the school year you get your kids that Vitamin ZZZ they need in order to make this year great!

Why you should have a dance party with your kids!

We all have those days where we are just in a “mood”. It can be hard to figure out how to get out of these bad spells, especially with the kiddos, but there is a solution. Does Musical Talent Affect Math Skills?

This is a tricky equation – reading musical notes is about seeing and understanding patterns, much like solving mathematical equations. Science has been trying to discover the correlation between these two for quite a long time! Does music help with math, or does math help with music?

While there hasn’t been any conclusive evidence that a person’s’ musical talent directly effects an increase performance in math, there has been much evidence that points to an increase in cognitive abilities.

Nadine Gaab, the principal investigator of Cognitive Neuroscience at Boston Children’s Hospital states “If you play a musical instrument, your brain shows changes,  Auditory, because you’re using your ears a lot … and then motor because you’re doing a lot of practice with your fingers and arms”. Playing instruments requires a lot of unique movements with your hands that trains your brain to change.

Music can be expressed mathematically. Musicians understand intervals and various types of measurements but that does not necessarily mean they are automatically good at math. Those with musical training have heightened skills in an area called Executive Functioning. This involves mental processes that allows the brain to plan, focus, remember directions and successfully multitask. Musicians are excellent at switching tasks and rules quickly, but this could just be a correlation.

While the scientific data isn’t conclusive, there have been strong correlations between a person’s musical talent linking them to higher cognitive abilities that ultimately make grasping the rules of math easier.
